Are Asian Americans Bad Models?
Hyphen magazine has an interesting blog post about Asian Americans on America's Next Top Model.
As blogger Sylvie points out, "Asian gals usually get the boot pretty quickly (or are called "emotionless" by judges) ... The winners have consistently been White or African American, though a few have been of Latino descent." I guess that's not what they meant by "model minority."
I've never watched this show, but I've been tracking pretty much everybody else's fascination with it. And I'm wondering if its popularity has to do with wish fulfillment, with how strange and complex the modeling world is compared to how everyone thought it was, or just the usual reality TV drama stuff. Any fans out there who can enlighten me?
And are the Asian American models on the show "emotionless"? There certainly aren't any current Asian American supermodels, and the only past one I can think of is Jenny Shimizu. This might have to do with there just not being very many tall Asian Americans ... or with there just not being very many Asian Americans at all. (But, at nearly 5% of the national population, and mostly in cities, that's probably not the reason.)
Or it could be that the mostly white fashion industry doesn't know how to "read" Asian faces, or simply sees an Asian face and automatically thinks it's "inscrutable."
What do you think? What did you think about the Asian American models you saw on ANTM?
