Teen Vampire Queen Has Tantrum

Teen Vampire Queen Has Tantrum

Stephenie Meyer is no J. K. Rowling.

The, er, traditionally-minded Mormon mother of three and creator of the popular (among girls) Twilight vampire teen novel series (about to hit movie theaters) is being silly.

Apparently, the incomplete manuscript of her fifth novel in the series--the series is actually over, the fifth novel was just a money-maker which re-told the first novel from the boy's point of view, yawn--was leaked to the internet. The novel wasn't even close to finished and the leaked MS had a lot of mistakes, etc.

So the author has decided to discontinue working on the book.

Wow.

Seriously? I can imagin a setback like that giving you pause. I can imagine it giving you menopause. But listen to this: "This has been a very upsetting experience for me, but I hope it will at least leave my fans with a better understanding of copyright and the importance of artistic control ... I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on "Midnight Sun," and so it is on hold indefinitely."

Now if that doesn't sound like Meyer is punishing people, especially her rabid fans, who are definitely the ones spreading the leak around, then I don't know what does.

What do you think? How would you respond to such a betrayal of confidence? Would you want to punish your fans for loving your work too much?

  • I think Stephanie Meyer and her insipid books are silly for a variety of reasons, and this is only the latest. As a fellow writer, I think she's being petulant and nasty, especially since she actually has said that she KNOWS who leaked the manuscript, as she deliberately gave different drafts to different people. Meyer's fans should be punished for buying into her sexist crap, not for being naturally curious.

  • I am actually a fan of the Twilight books (please don't punish me! :) but I don't think there was any need for Midnight Sun. The story is over, and I can't help but wonder if Meyer realized that as she was writing the book, and if it influenced her decision to stop writing. Maybe the leak was just well timed? This is all speculation of course. And I definitely, whole heartily, agree the she is no JK Rowling : )

  • i know. lots of otherwise perfectly intelligent women go all glooby when reading twilight. it's amazing. and actually, i would have liked to read midnight sun. it might have been less smooshy coming from edward.

  • That's actually a really good point; I never thought of it before (about Edwards POV making it more interesting). But somehow, I am not sure Meyer could write Edward's POV as well as I have his character imprinted into my mind. While I still do like the stories, with more and more reflection I am realizing that Meyer isn't the world's best writer. : ( Some loyal fan I have become, eh? : )
